BARRYSYKES.INFO is designed and built by me, Barry Sykes, to host documentation of a selection of my recent art projects.

My work is the product of various self-set tests, devised to tease out overlooked or untapped information. Over the last few years it has been concerned with survivalism, the wilderness, error, assumption, magic, crime, tourism, lies, estimates, a Billy Joel song and my own moral compass but it mostly boils down to trying to quantify experience and tracing a line around the amorphous or uncertain.

Recent work has addressed my relationship to the law, common sense and good and bad behaviour and has led me to shoplift, sell defence secrets, impersonate a police officer, forge a pricelsss artwork and make a series of sculptures bindfolded. I have exhibited in Kunstfabrik, Berlin; Chapter Arts, Cardiff; PS1 MoMA, New York; ProArtibus, Finland; a spare bedroom, a miniature museum and a forest.

As well as works made in the isolation of the studio I like projects to generate from discussions with other parties; commissioners, institutions, collaborators, locations etc... using the making process to uncover something of this context and relationships involved in its coming about. This almost neurotic desire to reveal the workings and expectations allows me to question the hierarchies involved, notions of success and failure and ultimately my own use value.

If you want to follow my practice add this site to your favourites as it is now updated with every new work I finish.
